OK, besides the Memorial area (where we lived prior to moving to PA) what other areas offer good public schools (at least Elementary & Middle) and a <45 minute commute to Greenway Plaza leaving between 7:00-7:30? We would be looking for at least 3,000 sq.ft. home OR a garage apartment as my in-laws are living with us and we don't want to feel crowded in the home with 4 adults and 2 kids. A fixer-upper isn't an issue and it is probably preferred.

Our budget would probably cap at $700K, less for a fixer-upper.

Thoughts on possible alternatives to Memorial?

West memorial? 77079? About 35 minutes at prime rush from Greenway.
Or do you have something against Memorial type places? Sorry, Have to ask in the " new" Houston.

Southdale in the Bellaire area is another option. Zero lot and diverse schools that some rave about... But the house will be new

Greentrails in Katy. Next west side hot spot.

I love Memorial and I'm really familiar with the area. It's at the top of our list right now...just looking for altenatives that I may not know about.

Bellaire and west U are like 5 mins away from green way and offer better schools than memorial.

Meyerland Willow Meadows Willowbend Westbury and Maple all on the south west side just outside the loop commute will be 15 min. In this area you can get a nice 2000sqft to 2800sqft remodeled home for $250k to $600k. I live in this area and love it just stay away from Westbury South and also in Westbury look north of Anderson elementary and east of Hillcroft

I'd look into West U or Bellaire in the $600-$700k range. Very close by with good schools.

I agree with Bellaire/Meyerland or West U.
If not that, something else off Hwy 59 such as Sugar Land. Greenway Plaza is off Hwy 59, is it not? Why in the world would one go to Katy or something off I-10 then? You'd have to deal with the 610 traffic mess, or near it. Sugar Land would be a straight shot on 59.

AK123...When I lived in Memorial prevously, I took Westpark Tollway in to Greenway and the commute was a breeze. Never really used I-10 all that much unless I was going to too the mall or downtown.

Ah. Well, I don't know how long ago this was but it's now not uncommon for the Westpark to be a parking lot in rush hour. Lots of development taking place out west on it, adding to the traffic.
Hwy 59 can back up too but at least it has more lanes and is free.

agree with Bellaire and west U but you may be priced out of those for 3000 sqft. In addition, to broaden your search, maybe something in 77056, 77057 and 77027 (afton oaks)? Not sure about the school situation, but heard there are some good elementaries in those areas. My friends who live in the city typically send their kids to private though, i think just bc they can, not necc bc school is bad.
