Doesn't look like much here because the leaves are starting to fall in these clips but:

I didn't click on the link yet, but agree that North Blvd. is a great cityscape. Very Southern and regal. A part of Houston that is rarely seen. It's almost more New Orleans in its aesthetic. Clearly one of the unique places in the city.

This is 3rd ward. the driveways are as cracked out as the residents: https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&l...=12,47.58,,0,0

This is the heart of the Ghetto: https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&l...=12,59.62,,0,0 Dowling street was a major cultural area for black people back in the day.

This is Ghostown, I mean Midtown:
https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&l...=12,46.79,,0,0

Dowtown Houston:https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&l...18.86,,0,-22.5

Gotta run but will post more scapes later.

Dalparadise, it is my favorite part of the city but it is not THAT unique. They just did it best.

There are similar areas in Braeswood, Bellaire and other parts of the city.

I need to post more of 3rd ward and 5th ward. these are considered the worst parts of the city but they have many nice looking areas

Nice pics. Even the Houston Ghettos look charming.

I think the whole plantation aesthetic, such as in North Blvd. is unique. That's the middle of the city ( by Houston standards) and it looks like some little antebellum Georgia town. Pretty cool, if you ask me.

Funny, because I know somebody that lives in front of "Parkwood Park" and the houses there are amazingly beautiful.

Every city has its ugly spots, even those that stake their reputation on their beauty. Does anyone have a synopsis statement as to why they feel some label Houston as ugly? Does anyone have any shots, or can they take some, that represent the ugliness? The photos I see on here don't capture it.

I live in that area.

And still walk around all the time.

You should see parkwood at Christmas.
Most of Riverside actually, but Parkwood, the neighbors really go all out

Not boosting or anything but i can honestly tell you it is about 5% of the city that carries the label that blankets the city.

For a while the lionsshare of people coming in came from I45 and I10.

45 is an elevated freeway for most of its run. It is one of the oldest Interstates in the country so the areas around it is not bright and shiny. Driving down 45 you see a lot of shut down businesses with their billboards still there.

Coming in on I10 from Louisiana you pass the swamplands where no one wants to live. The area is covered in refineries as it is the more industrial side of the city.

Houston doesn't sit amoung rolling hills, the downtown isnt set on a refeshing lake, but it is far from ugly.

People praise other areas that are oddly similar to Houston in development.
Houston is very charming to me especially the greenery.

Houston sitting in East Texas makes it the prettiest in Texas in my opinion. honestly.
And its burbs to the north and northeast are just gorgoeus. I love the ones heading to the Brazos valley.

Anyway, i will post links to the ugly parts later

My love of cities includes the whole enchilada, the bad with the good - the whole - the new and shiny stuff, the nostalgia, the grit, the landmarks that instill pride, and the mistakes you'd like to implode. That's largely what a city is to me, no matter how well designed it is and no matter how attractive it may be overall. There is a tipping point to the good or bad side, but from what I see in photos, Houston has nothing to worry about aesthetically. Maybe someone could start a "first impressions/entryway" committee to address blight by at least buffering it with landscaping. Ordinances addressing derelict commercial signage, weed control, and methods of boarding up windows might help. I know: that sounds like government getting in businesses' business, something Texans are against. And that free market mindset is just part of the enchilada - take it or leave it.
