Yeah you are. 38 miles of light rail will be built in Houston's core by 2012, with more to come by 2015. Commuter rail goes out to the suburbs and yes, there have been TOD's more commuter rail (look at Los Angeles).

um, I see no possibilty that they can get that much rail done by 2012. The Post Oak line ( which I believe doesn't even have federal funding yet) would take two-three years in itself. Remember how long downtown was torn up?

The Uptown/Pink and East End/Brown Lines are being funded by METRO itself. The North/Blue, Southeast/Green, and University/Orange Line will be funded by the Feds.

And a line can easily be built within that time frame. METRO is constructing these lines differently. Instead of doing it all at once like they did for the Red Line, they are doing it little by little, segment by segment. Parts of the line will open up while the other sections are still under construction. Construction will start this Spring/Summer.

Is the current light rail safe? I mean from the medical center to downtown. I ask because I am considering commuting by light rail if I live within walking distance to it.

Yeah, I think it's safe enough if you're riding in it. If you're driving around it, just be vigilant. I basically lived & drove along the line for a couple years and never had a problem figuring out the little icons by the left turn lights. I will also say have your own ride handy in the heavy rains because it can be shut down due to floods.

Thanks tstone. I'm a little confused by the map... the big red line is what is in place right now, or just the thin purple lines?

If you're looking here, it's the thin red line:

http://metrosolutions.org/posted/1068/5Corr_Board_Approv_30x40_v110607.181488.pdf (broken link)

It takes you from approximately the Fannin-Bellfort intersection, just outside of the south loop, to downtown and back.
