If you are moving to be near a beach you are wasting your time. Galveston water is flat out nasty. The Mississippi river delta gives us brown water all the way past Corpus Christi. I grew up in Houston and I bet I have been to the beach 40 times in my life. I have not been there in years and I have zero desire to go there. The closest nice beach is South Padre which is about 6 hours.

Next your budget is way too low for Houston. Housing prices are going nuts here. I don't think you can find a good school district in that price range even in the poorer suburbs.

As for pollution. Well Houston is not as bad as LA. It is pretty bad here. There is a trade off for our loose regulations. We keep giving free passes to all of our petro-chem plants. On top of that we are a spread out city with a lot of cars.

If I were in your position I would pick Omaha.

Free passes - really?

I heard that all the ocean beaches in Omaha were dried up.
