Houston's just not a walkable city and with the areas that are walkable since they are so small and in a single pocket of the city people have to pay up if they want it. You can't get it all and for cheap. Because the Loop is really the lone place that can imitate one of the bigger walkable cities Chicago/NYC, etc you have to pay more. You'd pay more if you lived in Chicago so just keep the same budget.

You had to have been paying more than $1300 unless you were in the hood.

Many do live Downtown but they pay more to do it if they want "safe"
You can live for cheap in the Loop but get ready for that gun license.

Thanks for the reply, but, no, the corner of Clark in Fullerton in Lincoln Park (Chicago) is most definitely not the hood... and it was a 600 sq.ft. studio for $1000/mo. + utilities. I think $1300/mo. is pretty reasonable. More importantly, it's my budget, that's why I'm looking for feedback so I can determine what areas I should really focus on. I understand that Houston is not a "walkable city" which is why I said that's what I will miss the most about Chicago. Nonetheless, if I could at least walk to a coffee shop or a few shops/restaurants, that would be really nice. I'm aware of the restaurant and bar scene in Midtown and the more up and coming, hipster-vibe in Montrose. I guess I was just looking for more feedback on the pros/cons of other areas that I was less familiar with just to make sure I wasn't overlooking other recommended areas. Thanks!

My suggestion would be to look in either the Montrose area or the Museum district. Both of these are very close to the Medical Center, and you'll find adequate housing at your price point in either area. Imho, Montrose is much nicer (and more established) than midtown. The museum district is perhaps a bit less established, but the location is great and the price may be a bit less money than Montrose on average. I'd recommend downloading the HAR app to your phone if you have a smartphone--the app is way more fun and easy to use than the website.
