I know minimum wage in Texas follows the federal wage. But does Houston and Galveston area pay more than that? I know El Paso doesn't. I am thinking of moving to the area, and wanted to know if I would be able to make a living wage there. I'm married with 3 kids.

I don't think the min wage is locally any higher than federal in the entire state of Texas.

Minimum wage jobs are meant to be a temporary place, anyway. They weren't meant to be living wage, career-type jobs. If you have marketable skills you should be able to make a living wage here.

I was the Chief of Security for the Fort Bliss Inn, So I guess the field I'm in is Security. Worked Casino Security in Gulfport MS, and been a patrol supervisor here in El Paso. I have also been a truck driver, but with 3 small children don't wish to do that again. And lastly I have owned a small business.

What is entry level security? The yellow-shirt guy who greets people at the door at Best Buy and zooms in at young women with the store cameras?

Sounds like you have some experience already. You shouldn't have to settle for entry level. You'll be on your way to a living wage. Always helps to know someone, too. After all, this IS Texas.

That patrol supervisor job I had was with Securitas. But I don't speak Spanish and even though the company says you must know English.. they had many guards I could not communicate with and they never gave me the full tools I needed for the job here, So I left the company.

Besides don't you think Securitas uniforms have a Nazi like look to them? very unsettling.

Thanks to everyone for the advice and info.. If I can make 11-12 an hour to start out I would be doing ok.. I have already seen some places for rent on Galveston Island for $800 a month. My wife will be working too, so together I think we would be a able to make a living there. I may also move my Business out that way. Scoopie Doo's - Doggie Poo Removal Service.. I'm sure dog owners out there could use the service.

Well, the reason I noticed it is that we have Securitas security at our company and everyone is an English speaker that I notice. Also, I think they just wear grey or blue polo shirts with slacks here.
