Hi! I'm interested in purchasing a small lot that has delinquent tax on it for 12 years. I couldn't reach the owners. I have contacted the law firm that runs the auctions for Harris County but they said there is no claims pending for this property. The person I talked to in the claims department at the law firm didn't know who I should contact. She said they just process the paper work when their is a claim on the property.

What is the process of getting the county tax office to be aware of the tax delinquency and to put it on auction? Who should I contact?

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Pay the taxes on it. Then file a liens pending.

Why would you want to call the county so they would auction it? Seems rather silly unless you want to pay more than you would had you went another route.

If I do this, how long would it takes for me to own the property?

Sorry, I don't understand. What route are you suggesting? Is it the route Binkyman suggested?

I've never done this before so I can't give you a route. I just think it's asinine to call the city to put the land up for auction when you would be competing with other people to buy the home.

I understand your point but the property is pretty undesirable (size and location wise) that it's only useable by me. Thank you for your suggestions though.

Because of the Liens Pending, any potential transaction involving the owner and a potential buyer couldn't take place until the matter was settled in court. At the worst, he or she would have to reimburse you for the taxes that you paid on the property. Anyway, that would take other potential buyers out of the picture for a short time. In the meantime, if there is no issue concerning the property now, you can just continue paying taxes on it.
Every year you continue paying the taxes will help you build a case for squatter's rights. If a small portion of a fence on the property is damaged, you might rebuild it keeping the receipt. Mow the property. Take care of it without trespassing in obvious ways. That kind of thing.
