Our Girl Scout troop helped to build the new Monarch Way Station at Brazos Bend State Park in May. Several of our girls (including my granddaughter) now have milkweed growing and are raising Monarch caterpillars. I am putting up my pictures of the one we released this morning.

If you get a chance, go see the way station at the park. And if you can, please get some milkweed plants and give our monarchs a fighting chance at habitats in the area.

I always plant milkweed and other butterfly host plants. I also plant nectar source plants for butterflies and hummingbirds. The drought is adversely affecting their access to these plants in the natural environment.

host plants; dill, parsley, pawpaw, milkweed, rose mallow, false indigo, sunflowers

nectar plants: hamelia bush, lantana, marigold, dianthus, milkweed, zinnia, verbena, black eyed susan, cone flowers, aster, vitex, butterfly bush, salvias (sage)

in the spring the houston garden center always has a big "milkweed is here!" sign with lots of plants. i do believe they are sprayed so water them down and in a few days birds, bugs, and butterflies will be using it. of all my host and nector plants they love the milkweed and lantana the most. this time of year my lantana is nearly all eaten up and looks gross but in the fall it'll kick right back up again

milkweed is a super easy plant to plant and keep alive. grows quickly. if it ails or dries out it'll pop right back up again with new shoots after some water. everyone should have at least one. they look really cool as a background or filler plant in a large flower bed or along a border. they can grow quick high

Now I see them again. They were gone for a while and it just had a box that said attachments and was blank. Glad they came back.

I'm going to be camping there this weekend with a group of friends and our kids. We'll be sure to check it out.
