Hi All,

About to close on a new home in the Richmond area and our mortgage lender (same as builder....Brighton...aka K Hovnanian) had Westwood insurance provide a quote. We also went to our normal insurance provider (State Farm) and had them provide a quote. The Westwood is approximately half the cost of State Farm. Granted the State Farm has a bit higher limits, etc., but not enough to swing the quote by that much, and this is after our auto discounts from State Farm.

My question is, has anyone ever used Westwood or more importantly made a claim with Westwood?

Please post your opinions!

Thanks!

B.

Ask and make sure the company is financially sound.

Shop around. Try Liberty Mutual and others. I've never heard of Westwood, but State Farm quoted me something ridiculously high that I thought the agent was joking.

Do not go with their insurance provider!!

They get a cut if you do. Shop and find your own by calling local city and county providers.

Liberty Mutual, Praetorian, Lloyds - I have seen really good quotes from all - I saw a surprisingly low one on Farmers recently.

Yeah, they most likely do - but if the rate is the best, why cut off your nose?

I'm actually in the same boat re: Westwood. I've checked around and found that Traveler's is a little cheaper than Westwood, but everyone else (State Farm, Progressive, Allstate, even USAA who does my car insurance) came in more expensive than Westwood. There's nothing I can see that indicates they would be a problem, so I'm planning on using them myself.

There's also an earlier thread asking about them here.

Yes. The reason's their rates are so low is that they primarily only insure new homes, so the liability is much less since it is under warranty.
