Our lease is up in December so we are looking for a new rental home. We love the area we are in, but reasonable rental prices are not easily found (The Woodlands).

I am limiting my home search to "good schools" and the only real way of doing that is greatschools.com and maps such as this one: Texas School Performance Maps

How much faith should I put into the ratings of these sites? Is a 5/10 schools really 5/10 ? The Houston area is very spotty which makes me very uncomfortable.

With little ones entering school my priorities are:

1a - location - I need a short(ish) commute to the north side of Beltway 8 for work.
1b - safety - I want to know my kids are going to a school in a safe area
2 - quality education - I know test scores are not a true measure of education...
3 -long-term stay - I would like to "settle down". I am not in a position to buy but will be in ~2 years. I don't like moving around and it is bad for the kids.

Any advice would be appreciated.

The ratings are based on the 2010-11 TAKS data, so it is a bit out of date. They are most likely accurate, unless an area went from "up and coming" to "already there".

My daughter's school is rated a 6 or 7 still, and it is fantastic now.

Look for a rental in Kingwood, Summerwood, Eagle Springs, or Fall Creek.

Kingwood is your best bet.

Just checked the ratings and my daughter's school went from a 6 to an 8 in a few years.

Thanks for the tips. It is scary seeing all of the orange and red bleeding across the map. My kids are just entering elementary school, but we plan to stick around the same area for a long time to come. We are renting while we get finances in order to buy a house in 2-3 years. My budget is $1500 for rent.
