Well taking a cab the whole way might be a little bit expensive!!

There is a Megabus very reasonably priced (as low as $9 depending on when you go) from downtown Dallas to downtown Houston

And you can take the Trinity Railway from DFW to downtown Dallas.

Maybe someone has a better idea, but that would at least be very reasonably priced. It is about a mile from the rail stop to the Megabus stop downtown, so you might want to cab that part. Note also that there is a shuttle from the airport to the Trinity Railway stop.

If you are asking from the other airport - Dallas Love Field - it should be pretty easy to get downtown on public transportation to the Megabus.

Someone who is much more familiar with Dallas may have a better idea!

Why not just save yourself the hassle and fly into Houston?

Last time I checked IAH is a huge airport with numerous carriers serving it and Hobby is a huge base of operations for Southwest Airlines.

Thanks watchful for the information.
Well. I'm asking the information for a relative who's coming to visit us. She doesn't know how to drive.
The ticket to fly to Dallas is about 1/2 of the price of the ticket to fly to Houston.

Unless your relative is coming from overseas and 1/2 price is $2000 vs $4000 into Houston, it's going to be cheaper in the end to just fly into Houston and not mess with a 5-6 hour bus ride or other alternate transit. They could also look into taking a cab from DFW to Love ($60) and a $100ish Southwest flight to Hobby.

American Airlines from DFW to Houston shouldn't be too bad price-wise.
