You've been seriously misinformed. It's still a war zone, with MS13 calling the shots.

So my own eyes misinformed me? That's interesting. I never said it was a completely safe place to live today. Just that it seems MUCH safer than it did 20+ years ago. I lived in the Jefferson Square apts. at Gulfton and Rampart very briefly in 1987, and I can assure you that back then, it was definitely deserving of being called a "ghetto". I witnessed 3 very brutal murders during my 4 months living there, heard gunshots constantly, and was even mugged once myself by someone who lived in the same complex as me. There were very few, if any families living in the area at the time. It has DEFINITELY improved since those days. Is it still an impoverished area? Yes, but that doesn't always necessarily translate to "ghetto". So maybe it's still not the safest or cleanest area to live in SW Houston, but I'd hardly compare it to the 3rd Ward or Sunnyside.

We're talking about the same area, right? Twice as many crimes reported in Gulton than in 3rd Ward last month:

Gulton Crime Stats (17E10) - September 2013 - 199 crimes reported.

3rd Ward Crime Stats (10H50) - September 2013 - 104 crimes reported.

Well though it looks like the 3rd ward has improved, those stats basically match each other from what I see. OK, so my choice of using the 3rd ward as an example may have been a little off the money, but how about Sunnyside? Or South Park? Or maybe the 5th ward, Kashmere Gardens, or Denver Harbor? Hell, even Hiram Clarke or Westbury?

Another thing to take into account while looking at those stats, is that Gulfton is the most densely populated place in all of Texas. Something like 17,000 per sq. mile, versus Houston's average of 3,700 per sq. mile. So, when counting those reports, and going by percentages to the population, it probably actually is significantly safer than the 3rd ward.

My main point is (and was) that Gulfton really isn't the nightmare ghetto that it was in another era, and besides, the OP's destination location is only on the very edge of Gulfton anyway... bordering a very nice part of town (Bellaire).

Well, there you go OP. The poster who lives in Seattle says it's a safe place to live. Case closed, lock the thread.

haha! I agree with you totally. I spent most of my life in SW Houston and left a year ago for LA. I lived just inside 610 and Fournace and traveled through Gulfton for work. I actually did a graduate research paper on the schools and cultures of Gulfton; particularly Las Americas. I know Gulfton is getting better but it's a long way from being a recommendable place. I do hope it improves, it is surrounded by so much great stuff.

There is no safe area near there. It is one of the most dangerous areas in Houston. Really high murder rate there. I think it still might be the highest in Houston.

Oh, I just LOVE when somebody points out the fact that I live in Seattle, as if that somehow will completely negate everything I have to say about a city where I was born, grew up, and have family that goes back 5 generations there. Yes, you sure owned me.

I grow tired of explaining how this works to actual adults, but Seattle is just a city I happen to live in right now. Sometimes people move to places other than where they grew up, believe it or not. I'm not from here. I have a lifetime invested into Houston, and even though I no longer live there, I still return for visits at least once a year. Usually more than once. Besides, you live in Katy. Might as well be the far side of the moon compared to most inner-ring parts of Houston. At least culturally. I'm sure any neighborhood more than 20 years old looks like the hood compared to Katy.

And for the last time, NO.... I NEVER said it was a safe place to live. I said it was safer than it was in the late 80's, but you keep conveniently skipping over that part of our discussion.

I was being very civil. Admitting where I was wrong. Refraining from snarky personal jabs. You chose to go that route, so just lay off with the Seattle crap. What makes you a freakin' expert on Houston, or more specifically Gulfton anyway? Did you ever live there? I did.

No, but I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express once.

All kidding aside, please don't tell anyone because I'm worried it could ruin my reputation, but I'm not actually from Katy. I've only lived out here for a few years but that's not even the worst part - I've actually worked in the Gulfton area for the last decade.

I keep skipping over this because everywhere today is statistically safer than it was in the late 80's and early 90's when murder rates reached an all time high across the country.

That, and the fact that no one believes you when you say that Gulfton today is safer than it was when it was this:

Yes, I remember those ridiculous commercials. According to the youtube uploader, it's from '84. And from what I remember, it had already been airing for a few years even by '84... which was only one year before Michael Pollack packed it in for greener pastures and that whole part of town went to sh*t... but sorry, it's not the late 80's. It was already Lantern Village by the time I was living there in '87. Cute though.
