I do live in Gulfton and I love it. It is one of the most diverse locations in the city and for being Houston its pretty densily packed. I hate the fact that many people in this city say so many negative things about this area just because they feel some impulse to propagate negative stereotypes that once were true. Yes there are lots if old women pushing baby strollers around with a passel of little kids in tow (although in reality they are more than likely from Honduras or El Salvador than Mexico, this is not a big "Mexican" neighborhood). Also, I personally know many of their sons and nephews and the vast majority of them are good guys that get up at 5 in the morning and pile up in the back of a truck with their buddy's to go work building those nice new condos, apartments, and townhomes going up all around town. They are real people with aspirations of making a better life for themselves and their loved ones. Its a nice area so please do come and check it out. Also, talk to your neighbors, they are some of the nicest people you will ever meet and they will watch out for you. The food is awesome and one of the best things is that I walk everywhere. There are metro stands on almost every corner too. I'll save the best for last, location, location, location. It is very conveniently located so say the least.

Nice post. Sometimes people need to be reminded that most everyone wants the same things in life, and are willing to work hard and do the right things for themselves and other people. A community can be vibrant without being picture post card perfect.

Is Gulfton all apartments or are there detached houses? I haven't been there since I was a kid, so all I remember is apartments.

There's the neighborhood of Shenandoah which is completely surrounded by the apartments and then I've noticed two old, old houses that are hold over from when the area was mainly cow fields. Other than that is apartments, stores, and other commercial type buildings.
