You might even consider the Heights - lots of fun there too. Great area and restaurants. If you live near Shepherd/West Gray - that won't take you too long to get to the freeway for heading North. You may have already looked at these sites -

Here is some area info:

If you're having to commute, living as close as possible to a freeway/tollway is ideal. It can shave 15-20 mins off your commute time.

Thanks Texas 7! I hadn't look at those yet, so I will now! I've heard the heights is a bit more "up and coming" and I'm looking a bit more for "already there!", haha.

Kiovo - That sounds great. If only I could add all of this into a search engine. I tried contacting some real estate people but they seem uninterested because of my move-in date.

Is this any closer: http://www.2121midlane.com/Apartment...27/2121Midlane

The Heights is one of the oldest communities in Houston. If you visit Houston first, might be worth taking a look just in case. It's full of old and new, good eats, accessibility, etc.

I agree that the Heights is great, loads of charming remodeled Victorians and ideal location to zip onto I-10, North Loop or I-45. That said, I think that your comment about being accustomed to a LI standard of living counts the Heights out.

When you are here to visit, be sure to check out all the new midrises along Memorial, west of downtown.

Great thanks! Is Rice/Military considered an upscale area? I think that may be the only thing North of Upper Kirby aside from the Heights that would bring me closer to the Woodlands.

i agree with those saying the heights and schumacher about montrose. both would have better commutes for you. as for your husband, as schumacher says, taking allen parkway to the galleria and you jumping on 45 from that area is better than you going to the woodlands from the galleria or upper kirby.

i live in the galleria area and when i go downtown, i usually will take memorial/allen parkway as its not that congested, but yes the traffic can be killer where i live. luckily i dont need to drive during rush hours, and if i do ive found shortcuts, but id look into some other areas that will be a little easier for You on the commute... heights, montrose, midtown, areas a little west of downtown off memorial or allen pkwy, maaaayyyybe even areas around downtown (east downtown).

Well thank you everyone! I think I may need to try and beg for help to a real estate agent after all. Every time I look up an area I swear it lists different ones for the same address, and I think I'm totally confused.

My boyfriend will be a trader and working long hours, so we need his commute to be as quick as possible. I would definitely prefer a better commute, but I'd sacrifice 10 minutes each way for a nicer area.

Thanks everyone for your help!

Rice/Military is the Memorial Drive area west of downtown I mentioned. Yes, it is very nice. A mix of old and new. Great location to access both I-10 and I-45. IMO, no matter where you choose to live in ANY of these areas mentioned on this thread, you need to lease in a complex with a garage. Any and all of these areas are subject to petty vandalism, and a car left out unprotected is their "victim" of choice.

I'm looking actually for a gated area for this reason. I drive a BMW so I feel I may be a decent target. This is definitely a hard choice.
