Hi everyone,

I'm relocating to Houston next month for work-pretty excited about the move!

Any suggestions for areas to consider?

A 30 YO SWF, I'll be working at the IAH airport (no, not for TSA ). Most of my shifts will start morning, and end evening, so traffic is an important consideration.

Budget- it's a tough one. With the moving costs I'm trying to stay under 800$, the less the better of course. But I certainly wouldn't sacrifice safety for cost of living.

Social aspect: I'd like to meet other folks and make friends, and the burbs probably won't serve that purpose. However, since my budget is limited I may just have to settle in the suburbs for now until I can afford to move closer to the city.

Appreciate any help!

Hmm, that's a tough one because of how far away IAH is. You might need to settle for a northern suburb like the Woodlands, Spring, or Kingwood in order to stay close by.

You can theoretically live in the loop (the city core, surrounded by Loop 610) though, since you'd be doing a reverse commute and it will be much easier. All you'd need is an easy way to get to Highway 59 northbound.

I like the option of staying closer to the city and doing reverse commute.

What are some areas that would fit my budget?

Around 800$. A studio will do, but I'd really like to have in-unit laundry.

Are you able to get a roommate? $800 is a little low for the areas that Schumacher mentioned. You might be able to find something in East Downtown or the East End, but those areas aren't completely gentrified yet and safety might be an issue if you're living alone.

Roommate would be tough to do, I like having my space...

How doable is it to live in the burbs and still have a rich social life?

Maybe you can get a realtor and find a garage apartment rental in the heights area

There are old small apartment complexes all around Montrose. Search on craigslist. You might have to up your budget by 100 a month. If you want to live in a fun area you have to pay.

You just have a different social life in the burbs. Burb people have their own scene. It sucks. Everyone I know that made the mistake of living in the burbs moved as soon as their lease was up. Burbs are for people that like the country or have kids.

What are you used to doing? If being surrounded by single people is more your style, then the city should definitely be where you should be.

It's not impossible to have a social life in the burbs but you'd probably be driving into the city a lot (that's what I ended up doing when I lived up there). There's a few spots in the north where single people socialize like the town center in the Woodlands, but of course it doesn't have the concentration like the city would.
