Cycling is not just a 'hobby'. It's a legitimate form of transportation and an important one. It allows people to move and be active. It takes cars off the already packed Houston roads. And of course it reduces air pollution.

Show a little respect. Geez.

Plus, for some people it's their only means of transportation [Mod cut: rude]

In most Cities that is illegal. In most Cities taking the entire lane is the LAW if there isn't a dedicated bike lane.

How do people get DLs these days. These questions are all over the DMV tests.

Get some side mirrors if you really worry about your safety

Thank you! You are correct!

In Houston I've seen people get tickets for riding on the sidewalk. Also, every bit of data supports the fact that it's much safer to ride on the street and to TAKE THE LANE.

I remember the olden days when you could bike for miles without significant traffic out in Katy or Richmond. If you are biking for exercise, you want to get your heartrate up (not because of near misses with cars ) you need long stretches of road without having to stop for peds, etc.

Right!?

Many localities have these laws, but they are often set by smaller jurisdictions, not at the state level.
Biking as a means of transportation, not as a hobby, is a newfangled concept here in Texas. Please excuse us while we catch up.

Bikes should be illegal on crosswalks as well

I just can't wait until we finally catch up to the Amish with their newfangled horse-drawn carriages. I still can't believe we're in the stone ages with those internal combustion engines.

I think most people are all for biking, it's just that some bikers don't seem to recognize that there is a time and place when, even though it's legal, they have no business riding.

Keep in mind, that I'm a proponent for the city adding more dedicated bike lanes with, yeah that's right, tax dollars.

When I was going to Texas, I always laughed at the beginning of the fall semester when the cops would be writing cyclists tickets practically non-stop in front of the PCL and that intersection close to the undergrad library. They would ticket them for not stopping at the stop signs, speeding and going into the crosswalk. They would have a cow (or maybe a longhorn) when the cop would start writing up the citation.
