just hire a day laborer and remove the bad grass. possibly the sod was the cheap ones bought from houstongardencenters. patch up your lawn with sod bought from homedepot or lowes. I personally just lay the sod on top of the lawn with no other prep and it comes out nicely.
again do not buy sod from houstongardencenters

HD or Lowes sod is usually crap too, as it sits on the pallet for days and dries out. I always buy mine from 290 grass and use a metal rake to loosen up the top layer of soil before laying it. If you're patching up different parts of the lawn with already established sod, then if you don't remove any dirt before laying the new sod, it'll look rough and uneven.

Depends on the yard size. My yard is $40 every 7-8 week treatment, my neighbor says jokingly they come spray paint my yard green. There is no miracle cure for a yard though, it takes time and depending on the yard several years to get into perfect shape.

I think that's reasonable. Does it include labor and materials?
