It's not too bad, really. Cross at the lights. We stayed at JW Mariott across the street from the Galleria on Westheimer. There are buses going up and down all the time on Westheimer, and there's also little cars that are operated by the city bus company that will take you up and down Westheimer for a dollar or 2.

For entertainment, we found the best to be on Richmond Ave, the next main east-west street south of Westheimer. It is sort of an entertainment district. Lots of clubs and restaraunts in the area. Seems like we walked from Galleria area to Dave and Buster's. It wasn't very far. maybe a mile?

This was in the late 90's, but I'm betting it's still all pretty much the same. It was just too nice an area of town to get run down so soon.

Fast Forward 15 years..Richmond is almost completely dead.

Most of the walking night life is down on Washington Ave., a short cab ride from the Galleria. Downtown has a few venues as does Midtown.

A Taxi cab is your best bet to get around outside of the galleria area, but you should be fine walking up and down Westheimer. Bus is safe enough, but taxis are the preferred mode of transportation for locals with the means.

Richmond Avenue is nothing close to what it was like in the late 90s and is no longer the "scene" in Houston any more.

There is a lot more to do in the Midtown district, adjacent to Downtown Houston.

Lol, Richmond has change quite a bit since the 90's. It's not the same Richmond you remember.

There are two buses that run downtown from the Gallaria area, the 53, and the 82. Both go downtown.

^^^^^this. Plus you have Uptown Park, where you have all kind of entertainment, Belvedere night club, Champs sprots bar, the tasting room. Also the Omni hotel on woodway has a little dance club/bar called the Black Swan. You'll need a cab to get around the Gallaria area.
