Given that HISD allows transfers, I would imagine parents who were more militant about their kids being among achievement-oriented students self-selected their kids out of those schools, encouraging the enrollment drop. All that's left are students who come from unstable, non-education-oriented households. This discourages families from moving there to replace families whose children have aged out. This leads to a precipitous drop in the school aged population.

Many of the Census tracts where schools have been closing have been losing the population of children - even population overall - for 20+ years. No population of families, no schools.

Just slowing down the inevitable that's all. They will close sooner or later.

I agree about NQ Henderson and Fleming since the Fifth Ward area is bleeding people

Supposedly a lot of residential housing is going to be removed in Port Houston but we'll see what happens.

Dodson Elementary is closing. Students will go to Blackshear, Rusk, or Lantrip. While the Jones campus will continue to house a high school, it will no longer have a zoned school program (so the athletics programs are gone). It will instead house a program for the trades. Zoned students will go to Worthing or Sterling.

also...HISD has let school transfers get out of hand...they see all these kids transfer out but what's done to keep them there? Kids busing across town at 5 a.m. just to play sports, etc.....they turn a blind eye

if the good kids keep busing out to Bellaire, Lamar, etc. how can a bad school turn around? HISD needs to get a grip on that
100% in agreement. Lamar is full of kids who are not zoned there, but transfer in because its a football factory. 3600+ kids at that school, while a good portion of the zoned kids are at St. Johns, Episcopal, Strake Jesuit, St. Agnes, etc, etc, etc.

There's also those who go to HISD magnet schools (HSPVA, Carnegie, DeBakey) because they don't want to go to the big zoned schools or want to specialize in something. I wonder what %s of students from each school come from the Lamar attendance zone. Probably higher for those at Episcopal, St. John's, and St. Thomas and lower for Strake and St. Agnes due to distance???

I agree that Lamar and Bellaire need to restrict enrollment. There are chunks of apartment complexes along the 610 Loop that can be rezoned to Yates, and some apartments in the Gulfton area that can be rezoned to Lee.

Sounds like a good idea. A couple teachers (east side) I know lament the ACLB rues, and would like to see more emphasis for high school students to learn trades if not inclined for a university. Especially since there is currently a need for skilled trade employees.

Yes, vocational schools are a viable option. Not everyone is college material. That doesn't mean you should be confined to Fast Food jobs the rest of your life.
