Hello all,

I've been scouring HAR.com just to see what is out there, and then I look at HCAD.org to see what kind of property taxes they pay.

My question is, when I look up houses that have a Houston TX address on HCAD, some houses have a tax from the City of Houston, and some do not.

How do some properties get taxed by the city and some do not, when they both have Houston TX addresses.

Can you tell I've been a renter for years? hehe

Thanks in advance.

Just because you have a city in a postal address does not mean you are in the city limits.

I lived in a place in North Carolina that had a Garner, NC mailing address and I wasn't even in the same county as Garner.

A house may be in an unincorporated are but still needs to list a city so they use what is closest probably based on zip code. It can get confusing. Many homes in Kingwood and Atascocita list their city as Humble even though they are in Houston or unincorporated Harris County. From the tax rolls and HAR you would think Humble is gigantic but the actual city limits are just a few blocks.

If it's an unincorporated area usually a county MUD tax will take the place of a city tax.

HCAD doesn't tell the whole story either sometimes. Like where I am located, I have to pay city of Houston tax, but my school district's HQ is in Galveston County. So that part shows up as a separate bill on the Galveston CAD website.

The Villages pay their own village and Harris County, not COH.

If your talking about Kingwood EA, I don't think that is correct. The taxes show City of Houston.

Memorial Villages. I didn't know Kingwood had villages.

Kingwood is in the city limits, but the Memorial Villages (Piney Point, Bunker Hill etc.) are their own municipalities, as are Bellaire and West U.

The other important fact is that Harris County does not collect taxes for every entity, only those it contracts with. I paid my city, county and school taxes separately at first. Now I pay school and county through Harris County but still get a separate bill from the city which does not appear on HCAD.
