Use Yelp to find a place. Don't use Yelp for reviews.

Yelp helps me with location, pictures of plates and menu. I gave a 5 star on a great eatery. I found out that it was docked 1 less star.

I've found the plain ol' Google review star system is more reliable than Yelp, but to each his own.

The like Open Table in certain respects but it will not help you find that hole in the wall gem. I was really disappointed to find out Yelp was rigged. I will be watching this thread for suggestions.

Honestly they are all "rigged." With the rise of review sites came Online Reputation Management (ORM). Yes, its a field, you can get a job doing it. Just attended a career fair for it. So, as much as you love a certain site, you can't really trust them. Why? Because half a star on a review site has market value. These sites can be helpful, especially in a city overflowing with new restaurants. I usually use Yelp to find out about places and cuisine types and ask if anyone has been, if it looks like something I'd like to try. That way, I can hold someone accountable, I know the person who's recommending, and if I like what they eat. I never take the reviews at face value, especially since we all weigh different elements differently to begin with.

So if yelp is rigged, then the restaurants that they suck must really suck!

Or they don't advertise with them. Low ratings seem to get swept to the "Not recommended" grouping when the same establishment pays advertising fees.

Yeah, I am really looking for hole-in-the-wall gems. I love cheap and delicious ethnic restaurants like Blue Nile and Cafe Pita. Not really interested in upscale stuff. I liked b4-u-eat because the list was so exhaustive. I would usually take a name from b4-u-eat and then check reviews on Yelp and Google. What's the best site for finding hole-in-the-wall places like that? Yelp, I guess?
