If you are willing to drive a bit to Pearland; Killen's BBQ is excellent. They serve a style of BBQ that is very similar to Mueller's and Franklin's BBQ in Austin. Mueller's is the best I've ever had in Texas and Killen's is a close second. Franklin's lines are so long, I've never had the patience to wait. I definitely recommend the beef ribs and the brisket.

I made it to La Barbecue on Saturday morning. It's a Franklin's line. I got there at 10:45 (because GPS took me to their old location first), and the line was probably around 200 to 250 in front of me. I waited until about noonish, and, due to time limitations, knew I'd never make it. I'm guessing I would have been served around 1:00 pm. So, I mossied my way toward the front of the line after getting a beer (free beer while in line - Saturday was Shiner), made eye contact with a dude about 15 people back, waved him over and then gave him $20 to get me a half pound sliced - he got to keep the change.

First, out of that half pound, nearly half of that was fat, so I got a little over a quarter pound of actual brisket. I'll say that it is right there with Franklin's, and hands down the most flavorful brisket I've ever had. It beat Gatlin's by quite a bit, and is better than anything I've had in Houston or Luling. I have not been to Muellers in Austin, nor have I been to Killen's here.

Since I have not eaten in every single BBQ joint in Texas, there very well could be a better place, but I have yet to have better than Franklins or La Barbecue. I have eaten at a lot of different BBQ joints though.

At of curiosity, does anyone know if La Barbecue sells a 'lean' cut? Also, is it possible that I just happened to get a very fatty piece? Franklins had that same flavor but not nearly as much fat. I generally don't order 'lean' that much, but if that is La Barbecue's typical fat content, I either need to order a pound to get half a pound of meat or order lean.

The line.

Corkscrew, located just below The Woodlands, is the best brisket I have had in the Houston area. It has become very popular, and the lines outside the trailer (no inside seating) have become a little crazy. Get there early and grab a number! With so many variations in preferences and day-to-day cooking, I don't see how anyone can claim one place is "the best" for everyone. Example, I don't like the pork at Corkscrew, and am happier with PitMaster that is just around the corner from Corkscrew - - and with no lines. Agree Gatlin is better than most in Houston, though has not been "great" for me. I still wish Smitty's in Lockhart was not such a long drive....

How is the line at corkscrew during the week at lunch? I've been meaning to go there for a while.

A couple of weeks ago, on a nice weather weekday, we got there cautiously early at 10:40/#7 - - and had our food shortly after they opened at 11:00. By around 11:10, probably 25 people were in line. Drove by on a Saturday, and a huge line snaked through the parking lot.

Anybody go to the festival? It appeared to sell out online. Admittedly I didn't go because I thought it was going to rain and had some other plans.

I made the drive, and they were closed today.

I googled: Corkscrew, Gatlins and Brooks for their hours because I wanted BBQ today.
All three are closed Mondays.

Gatlins closed: Sunday-Monday
Brooks closed: Monday-Tuesday
