Hi. I am moving from Austin to Houston to teach in the Westchase area. When looking for an apartment to rent, I'd like to be as close to 610 as possible. I like being close to cultural activities, local theater, good restaurants, and walkable neighborhoods. Budget would preferably be under $800, but could go up if I find a place I really like. I also have 2 little dogs, so need a pet friendly rental. Basically I'd like Montrose without the Montrose price tag.

Any suggestions for neighborhoods to look at?

Thanks - I'm excited to call Houston home!

Wiley

Lol, you want to be close to all those things for 800$? Good luck with that.

Anything similar to Montrose is going to have the Montrose price tag.

I am trying to locate areas in between 610 and the 8 freeway that might provide easy access to the inner loop, have reasonable rents, and be walkable. Does such a place exist?

Get the walkable stuff out of your head, in Houston you need a car. And the neighborhoods that are some what walkable you can't afford them for $800 an month. For your price range and where you will be working, I would be looking at apartments around the Westheimer and Gessner in the woodlake square area.

Look at apartments they are building near Richmond and 59, south midtown.

Two dog deposit in an apartment is only going to put your monthly rent further into orbit.

For the area you are looking at, I would suggest looking at the area bounded by Voss on the West, San Felipe on the North, Sage on the East and Westheimer on the South. There are tons of apartments there, but there is still somewhat of a walking vibe. (My wife and I looked at places in this area and remarked on how much of a neighborhood feel it had with people out walking in the evenings despite there being almost all apartments). The price will be higher than 800. I think that anything remotely desireable will over that budget, but 1k might be doable. My wife and I went through the same thing a year and a half ago--we simply had to up our budget.

One of the issues I have with Houston real-estate is that because there is so little actually walkable "city-like" space here, it always comes at a premium. This basically relegates middle and working-class folks to the margins of livable space, imho. Between the Beltway and the 610 on the West side of town, there is usually either very upper-class, or apartment-y feeling places so it will be hard to find a place, but not impossible. Some of the postings here are simply rude, btw but you won't find Houston to be like that. It is a very friendly city.

Since when did telling the truth equate to rudeness? If you ask questions on this board, expect all sorts of answers. Better for the original poster to expect to increase budget than to get upset later on when real life turns out to be different than what some anonymous City Data poster told her to expect.

Telling somebody to be more realistic about their budget is being rude? Lol, the wussification of America continues.
