I'd say they all have their pluses, minuses depending on the individual's criteria for "best" suburb.

The Woodlands has everything, IMO. But, it wouldn't be the best suburb if you are working in Sugar Land or Katy and vice-versa.
This. There are plenty of nice areas - the bestest of the bestest of the best won't matter if you are living in your car on the commute from hell.

I believe that the area got it's reputation and nickname from the stench of a paper mill and not actually the other industries. That paper mill closed in the early 2000s and did that smell. Not sure why paper mills smell so bad - same thing with the paper mill in east texas.
Pulp and Paper Industry Odors

Quote:
There are three general groups of odor producing compounds that come from pulp and paper industries. The smelly chemicals are reduced sulfides, ammonia, and other organic compounds.

In addition to kraft pulp mills, odors can come from sulfite pulp mills, wastewater treatment plants and landfills. Each of these sources has their own distinct odor.

Sulfite mills emit sulfur dioxide (SO2) which has a strong, choking odor. Wastewater treatment plants can have a rotten garbage odor, and landfills may have an odor from decaying organic matter.

Odors from these sources will vary depending on an individual’s smell sensitivity, changes in wind direction, temperature, and mill processing techniques.

For example, odors may be more noticeable at night and in the early morning because of temperature changes and less wind.

Why does it say 15 votes for Baytown but I only see 4 names?

I can't see it now, but that is really strange. Someone changed it from public poll to not?
I find it hard to believe that many people would vote for Baytown, which is an industrial city that is basically separated by water from Houston. Something's not right.

I was wondering why it had such few votes, it looks like a nice area. We may actually consider looking down there.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for. I work in the medical center and Pearland is the closest suburb. We also wanted great schools and what we really liked about PISD is how truly diverse it is, both ethnically and socioeconomically. Nowhere is perfect and we've only been here a few months. Check with me in a few years. Maybe I'll have changed my tune.

The Woodlands is great, but very remote and not so diverse imho. I loved Sugar Land also, but it was also too far of a commute and not as diverse as I would've liked. Come look and decide for yourself!

Baytown? It would probably make my three worst. Sugar Land and the Woodlands with ease.
