They've gotten big, I see them heading up scale, like lupe, and gringo's.

I love Chuy's, mostly because of that crack-like creamy jalapeno sauce.

I like the Original Ninfa's, too.

Honestly, I would probably like every restaurant on the list. Tex Mex is one of the best things about Texas.

No, Topaz, please please please don't leave for Austin! (I do understand, but I don't have to like it.)

I'm weak for Tex-Mex, ever since we first moved to Houston from Louisiana in the 70's. Cheryjohns, it is pretty rare but I even enjoy a run to the border. I make an excuse.

I think they have gotten a little pricier over the years, but still inexpensive. I don't see them as comparable to the other two because they are not a chain. They are as good as lupe and gringos IMO.

The only knock on Lopez is it's so crowded and they do such high volume that you can hardly just sit there and chill for a while. You order and your food is there in 2 mins. They don't deliberately rush you out, but that is sort of their model. Not the best for sitting and having a couple drinks, but food and service are great.

Los Cucos for moderately-priced local chain and OK 'ritas (love the Carnitas Los Cucos)

La Fiesta for the real basics (tacos and enchiladas - the best basic enchiladas in town, spinach are good too)

El Tiempo for an upscale but really good meal - definitely more expensive (you'll notice it) but I've never had anything but very tasty stuff, in decent portions - hard to justify paying a lot for Tex Mex but they pull it off

Lots of great selections on this thread. I will say this, El Tiempo has a GREAT spicy michelada mix.

Three major issues with Lupes: the beef fajitas taste like lime more than they do beef, the "salsa" is not practical for chip dipping, and the tortillas are too big to be functional with first having to tear them in half.

I've been there a few times. Big restaurant and clean. Their prices are reasonable. $8-$12. Free chips and salsa (tinsy bit spicy). I usually get the steak enchiladas and the missus gets the beef fajitas. I can eat a lot, but their enchiladas (3) fill me up after I eat 2. I finish it and I'm full for the whole day. Food comes out quick and it's super hot. Good service. I think I've been to Lupes once roughly ten years ago and thought it was good, but kind of expensive.

Chuys isn't bad, but I like Lopez better. One thing that turned me off about Chuys was when I was sitting next to the kitchen. The chef finished the food and put it on the counter for the waiter to pick it up. The waiter picked it up too quick and dropped half the food on the counter. He proceeded to scoop it up by hand and put it back on the plate. Yuck!?
