I finally got to eat at a Torchy's. They opened one in Katy in La Centera.
I have to say... I don't get what all the hype is about. Expensive and not that tasty, definitely not worth the wait.
IMHO, Tacos A-Go-Go (main or white oak) has much better tacos.

Just this new location or is that just they way they are?

I thought that of Torchy's in Austin too...I don't get it. I would rather have me some 100% taquito!

24 hour journalism....it goes "viral" and its popular...all it takes is for the right person to pump it up and let it be in a location like a Austin and it goes big

I see how some reporters pump up places in their own columns and it becomes popular

I think they are pretty great.

The tacos are original and the quality and taste are a couple notches above the 'boutique' food truck craze. Also, the ingredients seem to be pretty darn fresh. I think the thing they have going for them is that their menu is fairly anti-taqueria. Definitely not a purist spot...which I know a lot of foodies are into now days. There's no simplicity in the ingredients they use. For the most part, their taco's are over the top. Fried, savory, salty, flavorful are the first words that come to mind. For the most part, their taco's have been kicked-up-a-notch. Some people may hate it. I like it. I also like purist food too, and when I'm in the mood, I eat that.

If you want something a bit more flavorful and memorable, I'd definitely give them a try..or try other things on the menu. The tacos are pretty darn big. I do agree though, they are pricey. Anyone can jam in the similar ingredients and prepare it almost the same way for half the cost. Until that happens...

I definitely liked the big menu and interesting concoctions, so props for that. Fun branding, too.
I just thought it was really low on flavor and in the end, that's what matters.
My wife felt the same.

I had one of the breakfast tacos, and the tacos at Tacos A-Go-Go are filled with a lot more egg.

I don't care for it either. I love the interesting menu but found the food to be average for the price even though the portions are huge.

I've only been to the one in town, though. It often seems that businesses that are popular in Austin get lots of hype when they open a location here.

I used to go to Torchy's in Montrose. It's good stuff. They actually put tasty flavorful ingredients in their tacos, unlike TexMex restaurants which just drench everything in "cheese product"

Completely agree with you that it's overpriced and overhyped. Went to the one by Greenway Plaza a few times and left with a huge hole in my wallet and wasn't even full after having 3 tacos. I'm not sure what you guys who are saying the tacos are huge are eating, but I certainly wouldn't call them huge. A taco plate at any sitdown tex-mex joint is bigger and cheaper. The sauces are good, but otherwise there is absolutely nothing special about the food there.

I dunno man. They put a ton of stuff in their tacos. I'm not a lightweight either. The one I went to was near the med center. Of course, I shared a chorizo and cheese dip before I started on mine, so that may have contributed to my fullness.
