What is the old Astroworld site being used for these days? I came across an old family photo and it just got me to wondering. Google Earth appears to be an empty field, maybe? I am not sure exactly what the old boundaries were, though.

Wikipedia has an answer:

Quote:
The bridge crossing Loop 610 from the park to the parking lot continues to stand and is the last remaining structure from AstroWorld. The area where AstroWorld once stood is still grassland and is used for overflow parking during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Why was Astroworld torn down? Such a shame.

Appears that it was not making enough money considering the value of the land it was sitting on. Ironically, the land is not really being used for much of anything now. Wiki indicates that several of the rides have been relocated.

Ah, now this will give you flashbacks...

I am pretty sure the pic of us in the tram was 1976, and we all rode the brand new roller coast. My dad sat in the front car with my sister and filmed the ride on a super 8 camera. I wonder if that has survived somewhere....

Strange. Nothing has ever built there. Just a big empty field....eye sore.

The Houston Texans and Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo have a stranglehold on how any property in the old Astrodomain can be used. This makes reuse of any property difficult and of course is endangering the very existence of the Astrodome.

LOL where to begin?

You are whining because a legal entity purchased land that you feel is not being used to your standards? HLSR bought a little over half of what used to be Astroworld and can use it as they see fit.

What you are suggesting is akin to me buying the empty lot next to my home (or across the street) and then saying I have a stranglehold on the entire block where I live. Such nonsense is spewed on these boards.

Whoever can afford the rest of the old Astroworld acreage is free to do so at any time. The red outline below shows what is still up for sale:

That property is inextricably tied to NRG Park which is the former Astrodomain. The poster I was replying to thought it was odd/ironic/strange (I forget his exact attitude) That the property was abandoned because it wasn't profitable enough in relation to the value of the land it was on, and now sits vacant for more than a decade. It is doubtful that anybody is going to buy that land with any kind of development plans until the ultimate fate of the Astrodome is decided, and of course as it stands today, the Texans and the rodeo have veto power over any development at NRG Park.

I may have been whining, but my whining is pertinent to the question I was answering

I wouldn't exactly call a empty grass field an eyesore.
