I have a patch of sidewalk that has dead, yellowed grass. It has weed all over it. I am partly to blame for the yellowing since I applied some vinegar to a part of it which had crabgrass. It looks ugly now especially when compared to my neighbors. Any suggestions on how I can revive this before it becomes worse? I want to resolve this soon because this is rather public and an eyesore.

If it is not a large area and the weeds are really bad. Pull up all the grass. Kill the weeds and then replant new grass. Grass is pretty cheap for a small amount.

It was St. Augustine's grass. When I got the house from the previous owner, it was already in disarray. Other parts of the lawn are now much better. But this thin patch of sidewalk got worse.

It doesn't seem 'really bad'. Do you think fertilizing it with Scotts Weed n Feed regularly going to allow the St. Augustine's to take over?

If any of the original grass remains it shoud take over the weeds. You need to water it a lot. Keep it trimmed so the weeds are not so noticeable.

Thanks. That is encouraging indeed. I will water that patch everyday till the grass takes over.

every day is too much, three times a week should be plenty. You want to encourage the roots to grow deep, not shallow.

Also, there is a possibility you have chinch bugs, they like hot, full sun parts of the yard.

Actually I discovered yesterday that I have black bugs in the dry, dead parts of the sidewalk. I guess those are chinch bugs. Yesterday I just fertilized and watered it.

If they are chinch bugs you need to treat your whole yard with pesticide or risk losing it. Fertilizer and water will do no good. Google chinch bugs and see if symptoms are consistent with your yard.
