Point and ask? Just say the truth in a plain language, without getting offended, nervous, blushing, stuttering or trying to change the subject. Don't elaborate and keep in mind that your reaction to your child's curiosity will tell him or her whether these questions are "acceptable" or "shameful."
Pre-pubescent kids should not be shocked and stare at an adult male's penis, or ask awkward questions. At that age they should already know what that is, and what's for
Maybe those statues are there for a reason....
They're there because of a buddy system.

BTW, do you have kids?

Game,set and MATCH!

They should really happy that the artist chose to do his exhibit in Houston. Shows Houston is moving in a more progressive free spirited direction which is much needed to be a world class city.

I think i'd rather keep Houston as a closed minded southern city. I don't really care being a world class city. Let Austin be the free spirit.

Obviously puritanical prudishness didn't stop America from having the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the industrialized world. Perhaps healthy attitude to nudity as well as sex, might have a positive impact as more exposure typically leads to greater information.
In other countries neither moral outrage nor public disorder greets nudity. Men don't go wild, women remain safe, and kids don't stare. Nudity is normal, and that's the way it should be.
My wife is from Spain and we visit frequently during the summer months, and about 1/3 to half of all the women, all ages, are topless at the beach. My kids, now in middle school, have seen that all their lives and to this day, not one, has ever asked whey the women were naked, or made any mention of it.

In fact, this past July we were there and at the beach, I found four lounge chairs together under an umbrella. About 30 minutes later, these group of women, 20 something and a three older women, their mothers, came and plopped themselves right in front of us. Instead of facing the sea, they turned some of the chairs perpendicular to ours. I was wondering what would happen, and for the first 30 minutes, all they did was talk. But then like clock work, they each started assisting each other undress, two of the mothers and all four young girls all topless, less then ten feet in front of us. Not a word from my son, or daughters. No one staring, no one aroused. Okay, I admit, I had on sunglasses and they were right in front of us, what was I to do?!

I wonder if you (or another moderator) would be forced to censor or take down a picture of the art in question, if it was posted here? I ask because I can't seem to find one un-censored picture of it anywhere on the Internet.

Why are some so obsess with Houston being a world class city?? Houston is Houston and it's already unique and special.

Everyone interpets art differently, I personally think the statues are hideous and it has nothing to do with them being naked. The human body is nothing to be ashamed of but at the same time if someone doesn't want to look at a naked person they shouldn't have to.

I haven't seen the statues so I have a question - are they artistic as ones in Europe tend to be as they are old classics? Or are they more modern in appearance and perhaps designed a bit lewd in stance, appearance, etc.?

Hmm...yeah, I haven't seen them until just now. Not sure how I feel about this now. I think I'd rather see at least a partial cup of sorts?

I drove by and saw it today. It faces McKinney east of LaBranch:

The bird-masks make the whole thing feel very "Carnival of Venice" or even "Eyes Wide Shut". That said, I'd have no problem with this exhibit being indoors, or even if this single statue had been erected (no pun intended) some time ago as a way to represent something relevant to Houston, and was now considered a part of the very fabric of Houston.

Temporarily plopping down bronze statues of naked men in what has been heavily advertised as a family friendly public gathering space, and where no such types of art exist in other area public spaces, does not make Houston "world class". As for all the nudity in Europe, most of that is older than this very country, and some of it has more lascivious origins than most would assume: Nude paintings, obscene sculptures and gods having sex with animals: Pompeii's explicit artefacts which were kept secret by the prudish scholars of 19th-century Europe | Daily Mail Online
