People typically mean the Katy area, not Katy proper. Perhaps the KISD boundaries. They say there are what -- 60K+ kids enrolled in KISD? That's just the kids.

The sad thing is that when you read the Katy papers, the city council and the tourism person talk about Katy Mills being the "hub" of the area when discussing plans for the convention center, hotel, etc next door to it. It's pretty pathetic if they consider a crummy "outlet" mall to be the life of the area. This is why we can't have nice things around here.

The reason the Katy city council points to the mall to build around is because it is inside the city limits. Name something that is inside the city that you would build around? The Katy city counsel has really nothing to do with the "Katy area" just the 10 to 12 square miles of the city limits.

The City of Katy actually has a downtown, but they've done very little with it. With some TLC it might become more of the "heart" of the community, not that it will be the focus of retail activity of course. But it would be something less saccharine than an outlet mall (and not even the most well-liked outlet mall in the region).

They also have a neat park with some historic buildings in it. However, it isn't a surprise that the City would tout the outlet mall. An outlet mall--as generic as it is--is probably one of the best things that can happen to a city from an economic development standpoint. Lots of sales tax dollars coming in from outside the community taking the tax burden off the residents. I would probably prefer to visit an older downtown area with more character, but can't blame the City for that (outlet) being a big deal to them.

I think Katy can stand to have a retail center similar to The Summit in Birmingham. Driving around Katy and seeing those big houses and expensive cars, one would think that Katy would at least have another mall that's not an outlet.

Do you have much involvement with business people who come here from overseas?

Assuming (I said assuming) the Katy City Council believes their growth will be due to their proximity to the energy corridor, having a hotel and convention center by that outlet mall would be a smart play.

Yes you're right. I was wanting to know the population of Katy area not just the city limits.

So i take it you don't know?

Oh, i don't think having the convention center there is a bad idea. It's the idea that they are trying to brand the mall and immediate area as the focal/identifying point of Katy. Why not take the initiative to build up downtown Katy? There no shortage of small Texas towns with a "cute" downtown. I would think the immediate population could support such a destination. Fulshear, for example, doesn't have much right now, but you can see the nascent potential there with the few restaurants and shops.
