I’m scouting where to rent an apartment in Houston. What area would be similar to Orange County (Irvine, Huntington Beach).

I have no perception of the rent average in Houston. I’m currently paying $1500 for a fully upgraded apt. what is the average rent in Houston in a good area such as North West/ West side.

Where in Houston will you be working specifically, in terms of location?

for that much, you could lease/rent a house actually. I don't know those areas in California so I can't give an opinion on similar locations but I would think you would have plenty of options and basing a decision on where you will be working is a good idea as suggested by Spartacus713.

Don't base your decision solely on where you will work or you may loathe Houston. There are vibrant areas with coffeeshops, bars, restaurants and cultural offerings (Montrose and Midtown). And there are other areas which are downright depressing.

Use the search function and search for Montrose and Midtown. There are a bazillion threads on these neighborhoods.

no one said to "soley" base his decision on where he works. if he picks the best area ever and spends 2 hours a day each way in traffic I bet he would loathe Houston also.

base it on where he works as in use for a good starting point and expand from there.

I moved to Houston from OC 2.5 years ago. I can suggest you few places similar to OC. Where is your work going to be located at?

I think you forgot to mention you are paying $1500 for 1 bedroom, less than 1000 sqft apt in Irvine or HB, right?

$1500 less than 1000 sqft in Irvine correct.

I have not found work yet and not moving there until I get a solid offer. I rather find work away from downtown Houston. I work as a IT network engineer.

you do realize hes from the Los Angeles area, right?

so you arent interested in Midtown, Montrose, Rice Village, Uptown or any of the trendier urban places like that? Uptown is about 5 miles from downtown. i get the feeling you are trying to avoid urban areas though if you dont want to be near downtown..? there is urbanity and surbanity scattered across Houston. it really comes down to where you find a job. im not familiar with IT and if its confined to a certain part of town like other sectors are. for 1500 you shouldnt have a problem finding a place almost anywhere in town though, sans the uber luxury high-rise towers.

I'd rather drive an extra hour each day (extra, as in on top of) then live somewhere that I don't particularly like, so I agree with txdemo.
