First it was those tall narrow flags that stick out of the ground that made Houston look like one large used car lot. Now it's these lights...not Christmas lights...that outline windows of certain businesses. It looks cheap and low rent. There has to be something more to these lights.

Couldn't agree with you more about the cheesy appearance of those super-bright (LED???) lights!

Those are actually LED string modules meant to be used BEHIND sign fascia's instead of fragile florescent or neon tubes, not to outline store fronts or to be used as a direct light source.

Someone (probably in China) discovered they were cheaper, easier, & a lot safer (12 volts) to install than neon (12,000 volts) for window bordering & now its all over the place in every city large & small, not just Houston.

E-Bay/Chinese specials flooding the market can get you that stuff for less than $1.00 per foot vs. neon which is around $8.00-$20.00 per foot. Very attractive option for cheap businesses looking to draw quick attention because they are so bright (at first).

What those businesses don't know (yet) is they don't last very long before they start peeling & falling off & burning out one by one.

There are professional "sign grade" modules, then there are those cheap E-Bay specials everyone is using. A reputable sign man won't use the cheap stuff because it simply doesn't last the claimed life an LED is supposed to last. Upon looking at both of them side by side even your average sign man might have a hard time telling the differences from a quality product versus a crap one, but I can spot them with an eagle eye.

They are to help you identify when you are in a ghetto. I just keep driving when I see stores with those.
