It depends on if it is in a quiet zone or not.

You get used to it. But once they made the crossing near my home a quiet zone, I hardly notice.

Shouldn't all the crossings in the city be "quiet zone"?

Some crossing they can not be a quite zone to much traffic like Westheimer or Richmond and Griggs Long and Mykawa since there is a big yard there

I live near one and it's ridiculously loud. I think it took me half a year to get used to it. Once or IF the intersection near my house turns into a quiet zone I don't think I'd ever notice it. You will have to live very far away from a rail to NOT hear horns blaring. My parents lives in Telfair near 59 and I can hear the train blaring at night off of 90.

I have actually lived near a busy highway and near one of the freight rail lines. The noise from the rail line is much much more tolerable than the highway noise that never ever goes away. I actually like the train from a couple football fields away. It's a nice sound at night.

I have to agree. I live next to 288 the sounds from the sirens from ambulaces going to the medical center you never get used to or the constant drone of traffic or a holes on motorcycles with loud pipes. when I lived in clearlake I lived the to hwy3 and got used to the train and horn.

All I can say is that I can hear the train long before I see it, from perhaps 1/2 a mile away.

I used to lived like one street over the railroad and once you get used to it, you would not even notice it is there. They do like to move in the mornings I might add.
