I'm a late 20's male with a new job in the Energy Corridor area around the I10 and BW8 intersection. I'm looking for a 1br rental and it seems like everyone here recommends living in the Inner Loop, specifically the Heights, Washington Corridor, Memorial Park, or Upper Kirby areas.

How is the reverse commute to these areas? I've been watching traffic trends on google maps and it looks fine in the mornings but there's a ton of traffic going inbound in the evenings -- is this normal? What should I expect for commute times?

Are there any other areas I should be looking at aside from the ones I've mentioned? What do you guys think about the Galleria or Greenway Plaza area? Would the commute be much worse trying to get through that I10->610->59 stretch?

And lastly, any recommendations on relatively cheap apt complexes, like around $1000/mo with W/D included and decent neighbors? Seems like most are starting at $1300/mo but maybe I haven't been looking in the right places.

I live in 18th West Apts at 601/18th and drive to I10 and Dairy Ashford. Morning takes 20 minutes and evening 30ish. I typically hop in HOV lanes because I avoid stop lights in morning and heavier traffic in evening. I leave between 7:00 and 7:30 am. Night is between 6:00 and 6:30 pme

Our rent is $1495 for small one bedroom. Nice complex though. It was tough to find a nice place under this in the Galleria/Heights area. We only signed a 6 month lease though while house hunting. You may

May want to look in Washington Corridor area which will add to commute.
Good luck!

I leave at 0630 from Sawyer Heights Target, it takes me 15 minutes to get to Dairy Ashford/Eldridge exits. Then another 10 minutes to get down those streets. In the evening I leave at 5 and its 40-60 minutes. I've done the 5:30am drive and total commute was 20 minutes and only 30 minutes back at 4pm.

There are good apartments in Eldridge parkway/Briar forest in your range . They are safe and with decent neighbors. And you live close to the office. Specifically check AMLI, Chandler park, Promenade memorial...

If your work is at 10 and the Beltway, you could get a membership at Lifetime Fitness and workout before the drive back. Decreasing the commute time from the above 45-60 minute , drive, down to the regular 20. Lots of young singles that workout there as well.

Can't help you with rent prices, they are high everywhere. You could also look at older townhouses, they seem more reasonable than the big ammenity apartment complexes.

My husband did a reverse commute from West U to the Exxon Mobil Chemical building (next to BP) and the mornings were very easy--15-20 minutes. Evenings were often another story, I would say 30 minutes was average but occasional 45-1 hour. Regular rush hour times.

OP...check out PadMapper.com. I am 30 and will likely be in the same boat as you as far as work and the commute. These have been a few suggestions for my situation and needs thus far:
-Heights
-Montrose
-Museum District
-East Downtown (EaDo)
-East side where the Light Rail is supposed to service

Everyone says that for a single person in their 20-30's inside the loop is where you want to be. As far as rent, anything inside the loop is in that price range unless you get lucky.

Thanks, yeah I was looking more towards the west side since I wasn't sure if it would be a hassle trying to pass by downtown if I was to live east of downtown. It seems like the Galleria area traffic is even worse than downtown's though.
