We've really enjoyed Union Kitchen lately. It is jammed full almost every day, so have a reservation. The service is meh, but the food is spot on each time. I think the servers are just overwhelmed honestly. Also love the outdoor patio with the heaters. Lots of families, and small children. The bar is packed with 20-35 year olds all the time.
The atmosphere reminds me of local Bistros in France. Never had a bad meal, full with locals, great food, great wine, yet casual (the clothing is far too casual than Europe though )

Coltivare on White Oak in the Heights is crowded and noisy, but the food and cocktails are great. It makes all the lists for best new restaurants. No one would even hear a kid screaming. There is a garden/patio outside also if you need to take a walk. The downside is that they do not take reservations and there is usually a wait.

Definitely worth a try sometime and family-friendly to boot:

This place looks great and they allow leashed dogs on their patio - a plus in my book.

Good family atmosphere, but IMHO the food is way overpriced and just mediocre.

These are great suggestions. Dolce Vita is one of my favorites-- really authentic Italian food, and authentic in their attitude towards kids too (that is to say, of course your kids are with you, where else would they be for dinner?).

Berry Hill near Post Oak/San Felipe is good. They have unlimited Nachos/Salsa. Relaxed Mexican food and bar .
Corellis on Westheimer/Bering is good. Its small, their Sugarland branch is spacious.
If you like Indian Food - Saravana Bhavan on Westheimer/Dunvale. ( They are the best in South India)

Ha, I don't think a foodie would like Clay's. Did they finally get the animals back in?

I'd definitely recommend Baba Yega cafe in Montrose. The food is awesome and the service is very good. If you go Saturday morning, they have a breakfast buffet setup and $13 mimosa pitchers. If you go Sunday morning, they have an enormous brunch with the same mimosa specials. It's definitely an event and very family friendly.

Natachee's Supper n' Punch in Midtown used to have a sandbox in the lot next door for kids to play in. I think that section got sold so there's no more sandbox, but it's still a hit with families. And their punch is pretty tasty (for the parents).
