My Supervisor just told me that at least 10 people in Schlumberger were asked to leave today. So, the layoffs in Houston O&G have officially begun.

Schlumberger is announcing their earning this Thursday. If they going to cut, they usually provide one time "write-off" during earnings discussion as the public companies like to put the charge into previous year so you get a fresh slate in new year.

I think everybody is just waiting for the bigger guys to chop first and then the dominos would fall.

Someone told me Chevron is freezing all hiring.

Halliburton just announced also and they don't even want to say the numbers to chop (waiting for the bigger guys to go first).

The little guys like Swift are hurting. They can't get funds anymore and the banks are all squeezing the little guys now.

WOW....sad for the people being fired. And scary for what would happen to the property values with that domino effect.

I had a family member who was laid off in December right before Christmas at Halliburton (SW Houston). He told me he was not the only one who was asked to leave that month.

I thought Schlumberger is the only company lay off people before Christmas. What a cruel thing!

How old are you, mikeyyc? Just kidding of course. Those of us in the business for decades have heard that line before. I used to work at Shell, and I recall this one prick in the Geosciences department had an attitude about packages (and they were pretty fine packages back then); he said at Happy Hour that it was just a formality, he said 'the package is not for me'. This other guy across the table asked him if the envelope had is his name on it, the prick had a deer in the headlights look, and the other guy said 'then the package is for you'! We all rolled over the table on that one. Not only did he get it, he promptly accepted it as well. I always wondered what happened to that cat.

Default Btw...

BTW, this post is ruining the day for a lot of people. There is this one chick in my office who just about cries when the topic comes up, so I'd imagine there are others out there like that.

So... I hope the best for all who are faced with this situation. Let's hope things pick up soon!

I work for Schlumberger. About 20 years now. Is very common in times like this. We're looking at 1100 for this round, 60% of that in US, primarily Houston. But will get worse before it gets better.
