There's a lot of things we don't need, but we keep getting them.

I'm missing your point.

It's a non-issue where to buy gas these days since each brand offers little differentiation. Gasoline is a commodity!

Your missing the point. Its not about just a convenience store

7 Eleven is an experience. If bucees up and left the area people would complain. 7-11 is to most like bucees is to most houstonians and texans.

Slurpees can't be beat.

Bucees and Stripes are trying to fill the void. Still wish QT would expand into Houston.

I'm in Houston quite often, and honestly never noticed there were no 7-11s!

It's strange because here in Austin, there were always a few, but in the past year the number has increased dramatically. Not new stores, but existing convenience stores/gas stations becoming 7-11s. Which is great because, who doesn't like a Slurpee? It's the exact perfect beverage/treat for a Texas summer.

Anyway, all the new stores conversions here makes me wonder if there are already 7-11s back in Houston, but it's just not publicized yet. The Austin store conversions seemed to happen overnight, with no fanfare or announcement.

What is weird here is the old-school Gulf stations which have popped up. There are only a couple, but whenever I see one I do a double take.

People will argue and say that well, Houston has Icee in the place of slurpee, but its not quite the same. Not as fine and is drier.

Who wouldn't want a slurpee?

I am a native Houstonian, getting to be an old-timer too, I guess. I miss U-Tote-Em, which was a locally based chain ... followed later by Stop-N-Go, another local chain that expanded into other states until it was bought by Circle-K, which was based in Arizona and later went belly-up.

I remember having 7-11s here when I was a kid, even in the pre-Slurpy days. As I recall, they were the largest convenience-store chain in the world and I remember seeing many of their stores in Japan.

Nowadays, it seems as if the niche formerly occupied by convenience stores has blurred, since we now have gasoline stations selling one or the other major brand, attached to fast-food outlets and also operating a convenience-store type space. The average consumer doesn't really know who is operating what part of such hybrid entities.
