Hello everybody,
Just need understand the admission system for PK and K.
Kids who born just after 1st sept. do not become eligible for Pk/K admission just because they r little late , do they have to wait for whole year. In that case their whole year will be wasted. Is it true?
Or is there any way toget admission without wasting a year.

You're probably SOL. My son was born on Oct. 22 and he turned 5 this year and they offered no exceptions. So we put him in a public PreK in a neighboring school district until next year. It's not too bad though, by the time he gets into Kinder, he'll be smarter than the other kids in his class, and bigger too. My wife is a 1st grade teacher and my son can do a lot of the problems in the workbooks that they use, so I know that he would've been fine in Kinder, but oh well.

Your best bet may be a school where you have to test in, in order to be accepted. As far as an ISD goes though, I wouldn't count on it. We moved from NY and the cutoff is Dec. 1st, which makes a whole lot more sense than Sept 1st!

I wouldn't call it wasted, you could do another year of PreK or even look at a private Kindergarten.

These days Kindergarten is the new first grade. And so many of the kids are turning 6 in the first few days of Kindergarten.

Looking at the big picture, it will be okay. Your son or daughter will be the same age as his/her classmates when s/he starts next year.

No matter the cut off. It could be July 1. It could be December 1. There would still be kids just days away from the cut off. Having a Sept 1 cutoff is no different.

Kids are already reading when they start kindergarten these days. Just do a private kinder for a year. Your child will only benefit from being older and more advanced.

You can always contact your school district and ask if they will let your child test for K, some do. A bored kid is in no better position than one that can't keep up.

I would recommend this. My youngest has a birthday in early Sept. I signed her up for Kindergarten next year because the cutoff where we live (Denver) is actually Oct 1st, but I was really on the fence about this.

In most cases (particularly with boys) that extra year of Pre K is helpful. However, my oldest is a Oct 8th birthday and had to do 2 years of Pre K. She was extremely bored and her skills went backwards. I wish I had done a private Kindergarten. It would have been more challenging for her.

I know two parents who really regret moving their kids into a higher grade too soon. Social, physical and emotional factors all consider into the equation.

This seems to be the new trend now. Hold the kid back on purpose or have them repeat kindergarten.

In my kid's sport team, 3 of the parents hold the kid back for another year in kindergarten.

you can use it to their advantage and like others have said, when they get to 1st or 2nd grade you can have them tested to see if they can skip a grade.
