I am interested in buying plants (flowers) for my garden but I am afraid that we have not seen the last of cold weather. Is it wise to buy plants right now or should I want till end of Feb.

It is still winter and February just started. Still plenty of potential cold ahead of us. Heck this morning was 38 degrees.

You can buy them, but it is too early to plant.

Unless you're buying cool-weather flowering annuals, it's best to wait until late Feb-early March.

I'm having my beds redone next week but will wait until mid-march to plant. Need to get the soil prepped and stabilized though.

It depends on what you want to plant. You can plant many shrubs and trees now. Cool weather annuals should be fine. Container plants only, no bare root plants. Don't transplant anything now.

Anything tropical or tender should not be planted now. If you have to cover it in a freeze, don't plant it now.

I always wait till after Valentines. It rarely freezes after that, but you never know.

How do you prepare your beds before spring?

Right now I have the terrible builder grade beds, which is really just some awful top soil/"mulch" over heavy clay. Our landscaper is coming out and pulling all the shrubs and bushes, scraping the dirt/clay. Amending with expanded shale, compost, fertilizer and about 3" of good top soil. Will give us a good base to start planting shrubs/plants in about a month or so, and will throw mulch on top of that.
