We are about to buy a house in Sugar Land, this is a significant financial burden that we are doing only for investing on my daughter's future. She is deaf and wears cochlear implants, she will be attending the regular program but will need special accommodations.

We are still not quite sure what school district provides the best special accommodations for deaf children, either Fort Bend ISD or Katy ISD.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Cristina,

I would go speak to special education services at both districts. I don't have any experience with FBISD, but they look like a mess (google Fort Bend ISD rezoning). I would stick with KatyISD imo. Good luck.

I would go Fort Bend over Katy. I have heard far better things about special accommodations in Fort Bend, although Katy is not bad either. Most of the zoning issues have been figured out in Fort Bend.

For accommodations like this, I don't think it will make a difference because all schools in US must follow the IEP paperwork under federal guidelines. This is to ensure that children with a disability will reach their education goals.

But in my opinion, it's more important to focus on language development and self-esteem through American Sign Language (ASL). The cochlear implant is not always the solution often suggested by hearing speech pathologist and medical doctors who are in the business to make money. The best education for deaf children are from deaf teachers who truly understand effective ways to develop your child. Unfortunately, many deaf programs are under run under oppressive hearing administrators and principals who have no background in deaf education.

You might also consider sending your child to summer camp at Camp Sign for deaf children.

FBISD is a much better school district over Katy. Plus you have the added bonus of avoiding I-10.

Cristina,
Not sure if you got to move already. My son has bi lateral cochlear implants. He is very young, however I love his speech therapist and also the school district sends a teacher to provide additional speech therapy at home. The teacher is soo nice and she has worked with soo many people that are now grown. She may be a great contact for you to start.

There is also guide by your side group Family group and their mission is to support in an unbiased manner to parents/guardians with children who are deaf or hard of hearing. When I first moved here I was approached by one of their members a parent that had an older child than mine and they can give you feedback since they have lived in this area longer. and there is also Texas Hands and Voices They we all so helpful. And there is also me...

There is so little information out there when you relocate it can be overwhelming. DM if you prefer
