The River Oaks home is technically owned by the Covenant Trust, which means the Osteens do not qualify for a homestead exemption on it. They will pay around $260,000 in property taxes on the new home this year."

I read that too, but there is a Homestead Exemption on their house.

I also read that it's owned by the Convenant Trust, but I think that trust was an interim owner and it was then sold to the Osteens. The current owner's name (Joel and Victoria Osteen) is hidden on the county records.

The amount of property taxes is also hidden on county records but the 2009 taxes are shown on other sites, like blockshopper. Of course, according to county records, the value has increased by $1.5 million since 2009.

You have me confused. If you don't want any organization that can afford to pay the head of said organization $200k or more, you'll be either pulling the tax exempt status from a lot of tax-exempt organizations or severely limiting who they can hire.

Top charity CEOs pay exceeds $1 million - Oct. 10, 2013

Like I said, I think all organizations and businesses should pay taxes . The billions of tax dollars that would generate would mean the everyone else would need to pay less. Right now, we are all inadvertently subsidizing non-profits and religious organization regardless of whether or not agree with use or believe in the services that they provide.

Individuals can decide for themselves which charities or religious institutions they want to support.

Tax Exempt status is too easily abused and it's too big of a machine for the government to adequately police.

Easy solution
Flat tax after X amount of profit .... let's pick a round number $50,000.
And I know that there's way around that, too.

Sure there is. Instead of making profit just bloat salaries/overhead.

Maybe 50k in revenue?

That and the Mormon church. Have you SEEN the one on Champion Forest
Those Mormons are rolling in dough but pay no taxes either.

And people act like Lakewood and the Osteens are the only religious leaders living large. The Mormon heads, the freaking Pope, all of them.

Singling out one doesn't work.

That's a very un-American thing to say.

The whole point of a democracy is so that people can voice their opinions and have a say in government.

How about we add an additional tax to everything that is sold, each bank transaction and each phone call, text and email that is sent? With all those extra hundreds of billions, think of the extra programs that could benefit society.

It has nothing to do collecting more or less taxes overall. It's about spreading the tax burden equally. Why should anyone have to pay higher taxes so that the government can give tax breaks to a religious organization that they are not a part of?
