There are Indian families all over Houston but there are more on the Southwest side which unfortunately is on the opposite side of the city from UH. There is an area called the Ghandi district centered at Hillcroft and Highway 59 which has hundreds of Middle Eastern shops and restaurants. What is your budget for monthly rent assuming 1 bedroom apartment?

You did not mention if you are an undergraduate or a graduate student. If you're an undergraduate, you might plan to live on campus in student housing. There may be graduate student housing available on campus as well. Did you ask the admissions office about housing for foreign students, who to contact, etc.?

Google Indian Organizations Houston for all kinds of information about living here.
Houston is a huge, sprawling city with VERY limited public transportation. If you are thinking about living in a part of town with many Indian families or a temple, be aware that most are in suburban areas that are practically impossible to reach without a car. For most of its existence, UH has been a commuter school and is surrounded by acres of parking lots. It is changing, but the neighborhood around the UH central campus still does not offer much in terms of off-campus student housing, places to shop, cafes or entertainment.

According to the UH website, there are more than 600 Indian students currently enrolled there, so you will definitely meet others from your country. There are likely several Indian student organizations that will welcome you as a member.
