Im a new home owner and i found a great house with a swimming pool in the back, i was wondering if any one knows how much they think the home insurance will be, and how much monthly maintenance (electric, water, gas, cleaning) would be.
Im really leaning in to getting the house but if its unreasonable to have a pool i will not.

Thanks guys

I use Liberty Mutual for my homeowner's insurance. When I was going to have my pool built, I called to ask them how much my insurance would go up. They told me it wouldn't. I called my agent directly, and he confirmed that. It struck me as very odd, but it hasn't gone up at all and they say it's covered.

I've noticed about a $20 increase in my electric bill since getting the pool.

I clean my pool myself, and I spend about $30 per month on supplies.

Of course my monthly pool payment is crazy, but that won't impact you unless you would like to chip in...

Expect a minimum of $100 per month for pool maintenance and increase water and electric bill.

If you have kids this is the best life style upgrade ever. You will never regret it. As others said, I don't pay extra for my insurance, electricity is about 20-30 more, I take care of the pool by myself, and mine was paid in cash so no payments :-)

Unless you have health or mobility issues or travel a whole bunch, I can't see the need for most people to pay for a pool maintenance company.

I'm guessing that I spend about 40 minutes a week on the pool, if that much.

Every other day, I clean out the skimmer filters, unless there has been a storm or during the big fall leaf drop. That takes about 5 minutes starting from thinking about it. Twice a week, I empty the robot bag and clean out the pump filter baskets. Probably about 8 minutes. On the weekend, I might need to brush the stairs. That is when I'll also check the chemicals and add salt and acid. I'm guessing 15 minutes. Every three months I'll clean my filters. That is about a 45 minute process.

Each year, I'll be sealing my rocks. Every few months, I also pressure wash my deck. Neither of these would be an include service with most maintenance companies.

I know my pool stays nicer than my next door neighbor who uses a service.

If you are physically capable and don't screw around until the pool gets bad, it's really not a big deal taking care of it. My pool is a "salt water" setup, but from what I've read, it's not that much different, in terms of time, than a traditional pool.

I think I enjoy mine more than my kids enjoy it.

Your pool is paid for? I hate you.

I'm interested in doing a pool as well in the future. What item(s) usually make electrical bills go up? Is it the heater? Pumps?

pumps run daily for about 8-10 hours a day.
The heater depends on how often you heat your pool (and some are gas). I've just been heating the hot tub lately.

I second what Pedro says although mine is not salt water. I take care of everything except for the back washing and my husband does that. I see no reason to pay someone to come and do it, it's easy. Full disclosure, We are having a problem with the pool at the moment but it is nothing to do with maintenance. Make sure you get a variable speed pump, it will run 24 hrs a day but is so much more energy efficient. We don't use as much chemicals anymore either as the pump is running all day circulating that water. We don't have a heater and are still debating getting one. It would be gas so cheaper than electricity. When we changed the pump we also got new A/C units about the same time so it is hard to say how much we saved by doing that. My highest electricity bill last year was about $270 for approx 3300 sq ft house, built in 1979 and that is keeping the temp at 72. No way does our pool cost us $100 a month.

When I first move into my house, the pool guy came and said he would take care of my pool. I said great how much? He said 200 bucks a month so I said please close my gate on the way out. Half my neighbors in my block have pools and the guys manage all of them. He is making a killing doing 10 minutes of work a week on each one of them.

I figure i spend $30-40 a month on chemicals and stuff on the pool.

Just like Pedro said, it shouldn't take 15 minutes a week on the pool.

The only thing running is the pumps and that is running couple hours a day if that, so it should not' use up that much electricity.

Instead of a pool maintenance person get a good robotic pool cleaner off Amazon. You can run the pump less and save electricity/time/money. The difference in having and pool and not having one in regards to monthly expense is not much.
