I remember other cities tried to pay Jean Michel Jarre to perform on their city... but he still chose Houston.

Rendez-vous Houston - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Here is a video of it.

The video hardly gives the show any justice.... it was amazing. Was reminiscing my time in Houston many years ago. I remember the city literally stopped. I was sitting on the freeway and not a car passed us throughout the concert.

Can only imagine the logistics something like this would have to go through today.
Still, hope someone does this again one day. Very cool experience.

Wow this is a blast from the past!

I recall feeling so bad for all the people stranded on the overpass sitting in their cars.

I lived off of Kane and Sawyer St. and walked over to the bail bond houses and took a front yard seat in the grass. I think I had the best seat for the show...just walking distance from my house.

Default I left town

I remember being on a flight leaving Houston while the party was going on. I was on a Southwest flight to El Paso and the pilot flew right over it, that's about all I saw.

And even the video can't capture the environment. The city was reeling economically. 82-83 had been bad, but people thought the worst was over. Then the 86 oil price collapse hit. They estimated 25% of Houstonians lost their jobs at some point during that year. This was something really uplifting and uniting.

Yes that is when Alief turned into what it is today... it was 1987 when we left there. The VP of an oil company even lost his job and he was a neighbor of ours.

This outdoor free concert really was uplifting and a memory I will remember forever.

Thanks for sharing it with me today!

I remember we drove in from the Champions area to near Midtown to watch the show. I was just a Middle Schooler back then. I recall it was very exciting.

I remember it -- absolutely wonderful! Too costly to put on something similar today, even if private funds paid for it. At this point in time, any COH money earmarked for other luxuries should be used for deferred infrastructure projects.

I was there, in Eleanor Tinsley Park. We staked out our spot all afternoon. I remember wishing it were sunny before the show started, but ended up enjoying the way the cloud cover enhanced the fireworks and lasers. A great and memorable event.
