I have been told that if you are driving on 45 or 59 and you take Tollway exit then the first exit in the Tollway will be free.

Is this true?

That is true.

From 59S the free exits are Beechnut going west and Gessner going east.
From 59N the free exit is Mesa going east and the entire segment going west to 45N is free.

From 45S the free exits are Beamer going west and Genoa Red Bluff going east.
From 45N the free exit is Ella going west and the entire segment going east to 59N is free.

Its a Toll Road,, unlikely to find a significant segment of freeway.

That's because it's Beltway 8, not the Sam Houston Toll Rd.

There are short, free segments that link connecting points that would be ridiculous to charge for (due to short distance), and have no direct feeder road access for.

One example is going from I-45 to get to Red Bluff Road (going east). You can get on a short segment of the beltway (south belt), and do just that. It all happens before hitting a toll exchange, and there is no toll at the exit. There are numerous "Last Free Exit" signs around town.

I say tomato you say potato?

It is still part of the freeway without getting off. From JFK entrance to the last exit by Greens road, the "beltway 8" is free and then it becomes Sam Houston Toll Rd.

It is free on Beltway 8 from 59N going west at least until IAH. Just did that a week ago and didn't have to pay any tolls. Then again Greens Rd is like the first or second exit anyway.
