Thank you Ethanw. I am not used to "walking out" in such scenarios; but you are correct. It is way too much money! I will talk to my wife and see if this is something we should try LOL. Really appreciate where you are coming from.

So if a new house does not have cat5/6 droppings pre-wired, what options do we have to add Ethernet-based security system?

You can always drop the cables yourself. It will be more time consuming/expensive/messy than if you were doing it before the dry wall went up but it is certainly do-able. For some exterior locations they may be particularly hard, but if you run it along the edges/gutters/soffits and paint it to match then they look ok.

Another option if the builder don't back out you could drop wiring raceway tubes to each location and later pull your own wires :-) as many as you want. Make sure when they install the tubes they leave a rope inside it so you can easily pull you wires. Just another efficient option rather than paying $200 each cable. INSANE mate. The tube is also very economical if you think about it.
