Baytown is a working class city with its bad areas and its good areas. Only you can decide your needs and if you think living in Baytown area works best for you, you owe it to yourself to seek out those who actually live there currently and can tell you the best areas. I would think that would be those Newer areas and those zoned to goose creek schools. I don't live there and am giving just a guess.

If you look and don't like then people here have given you great suggestions on other areas. Deer park isn't bad either and gives you good schools.

Yn0hTnA ,
You have clearly mastered the paradoxical. Or the satirical. Or the antithetical. All three work.
And the bridge really is awesome. I love it.

Texas7,
You are right. All the negativity about Baytown aside, there are still positives to be found. I feel secure with our decision. We'll manage for a year then reassess after that.

Thanks!

Nope, I'm being dead serious; the natural environment around Baytown is beautiful. Verdant, lush, subtropical flora everywhere, be it live oaks, fruit trees, colorful plants, pines, palms, etc. The negatives to the area are entirely man-made (with an exception to the Fred Hartman Bridge, or other architecture).

So sorry I misunderstood. Well, there you have it. Proof positive I need to get out and explore -- which my son and I love to do. Thanks so much for that needed re-direction.

The people I know from Baytown are pretty cool. Its a blue collar suburb, so don't expect chic clubs and high end sushi places.

For some reason, many artists and musicians are originally from Baytown.

I am a little late to this conversation, but I think you made a good choice to try Baytown. There is a definite tendency to bash Baytown. Baytown, like any other place, has good and bad areas. It appears you found a good one to start out in. Given an open mind, you will discover positives in Baytown. I really like the Hwy 146 north corridor, BTW.

Other thoughts: Goose Creek schools are a challenge, but Barbers Hill schools in Mont Belvieu are excellent. Better than Clear Lake, IMO. Traffic is not too bad in Baytown. Baytown has a "casual" blue collar mindset. Stay away from the WalMart on Garth on late weekend nights. Discover the good restaurants. Enjoy the waterways.

Finally, Baytown has fantastic real estate bargains. It may be THE place in TX where your real estate dollar goes the furthest. Welcome!

I think I might have thrown folks off in terms of my description of the kind of environment I was looking for. And that still holds true. I value tolerance, open hearts and open minds. But, just as having an education does not necessarily make for an objective person, neither does being blue collar mean you are small minded and intolerant. My son and I are excited about getting down there and exploring.
