Why are there so many mattress stores in Houston? I have lived in the Houston area for years and I still don't understand this. It seems every strip center has a mattress store and a nail salon. Why are so many stores needed for a product that people purchase once every 10 years or so? How do they stay in business when no one ever seems to go in them?

One of the biggest mysteries of Houston in my view.

Many are fronts for illegal money.

10 million people.. maybe 7 million beds ... average mattress lasts maybe 7 years.. that's around 1 million mattresses sold per year in the Houston area.

With around 50-75% markup and just a couple employees, there is lots of money to be made.

Maybe Houstonians get more use out of their mattresses than the average person.

i've pondered this myself. they rarely have customers so you know their markup has to be really high.

Those dirty and nasty mattresses I see in truck beds, and top of cars around town being moved look older than that, maybe 10 to 15 years for some. They've got the stains to prove it. Yuck!

Its funny, the mattress companies used to advertise how you should replace your mattress every 10 years, now its magically 8 years. Seems to coincide with the increase in stores...
