Austin, galveston, corpus, san antonio, dallas. New orleans once in awhile (new orleans sucks). I second NW arkansas but much longer drive. For a bit longer you can make it to big bend in west tx

Never find good domestic airline routes for cheap so I dont fly for mini vacations.

The post you are responding to is spot on. The amount of flights from the two airports can bring cheap airfare, if that's still not affordable enough for you and your family that's another issue all together but it still remains a practical option for some people for weekend trips

If you're trying to get out of the Houston area altogether, there's basically four tiers of destinations. One is within 2-4 hour drive. This includes the Hill Country / San Antonio / Austin, Rockport / Corpus, and the SW Louisiana casinos.

Next is a 6-8 hour drive. This will get you to New Orleans, the doorstep of the West Texas mountains, and eastern Oklahoma / SW Arkansas. The time assumes you're not traveling through other major metro areas at rush hour.

The next tier is flying 1-2.5 hours. Many Houstonians of middle class or higher income routinely fly to New Mexico and Colorado, Mexico, the Florida Panhandle for getaways, especially in the summer when driveable destinations are rather too hot. Air fares to most of these places are fairly reasonable from Houston. Some folks will still drive to these places but it's a 10-12 hour trek. I've met quite a number of people who have gone to the Missouri / Arkansas Ozarks, which require a similar drive time, but don't have nearby affordable flights, so everyone drives.

The next tier is flying to the usual nationwide tourist destinations: California, Chicago, Las Vegas, Orlando, Charleston, DC, NY, etc. Not always cheap in terms of air fare, but there's tons of flights on United and Southwest, because Houston has hub airports.

Do a staycation at a local luxury hotel. It really feels like you're from out of town

Totally reasonable question...especially if one is not from Houston and/or hasn't been there long.

Depends if you have kids or not. For a long weekend, try Corpus, South Padre, Austin, Hill Country, New Orleans, Cancun/Cozumel, Ixtapa, Baja, Dallas...
