We have Smith Thompson Security.

We have our own cameras that are not part of the security system. Each backs up to its own SD card and HDD and can be monitored from the internet, phone, etc. Much cheaper to purchase your own than to deal with them through a security company.

Check ADT reviews on Yelp and BBB and better stay away.

Free equipment/installation is a catch, but 5-year overpriced contract will be a huge problem in a future.
5-year contract is ridiculous especially nowadays when more and more companies provide no-contract plans.

I read, their cancellation fee will be based on the amount of time until the end of contract. For example, you decided to quit after 24 months. You have 36 months left. 36x55 = $1980: that will be your cancellation fee with ADT.

I have Simplisafe. No problems so far. No contract, no catch. Everything works well. However my experience is not that huge to rate their performance. But they are most reasonably priced. Self-installation is very simple. Everything is wireless. Amount of false alarms depends more on particular user rather than security system. For example: you forgot to turn off your alarm and went out to the backyard and this triggered false alarm, etc.

Yes agree a lot with Ghost Town. I am looking at Simplisafe to replace or even go in conjunction with another alarm system. It has lots of options so you don't have to have monitoring if you don't want it. And finally the amount of false alarms depends less on the alarm company and more on you and your house. Heavy thunder can set off an alarm no matter what the company. A curious cat can do the same.

yelp? hahaha.. I believe everything I read on there.

ADT has an A+ rating with the BBB fwiw.

Equipment is always negotiable. Contract is too.

In my opinion, ADT is horrible.
I had them when I was in Florida - their response to an alarm was horrible.
I canceled them and went with a local dealer - they were just as bad.

Then I got smart... I now use SimplySafe and I am VERY happy with their service.
The price is outstanding and reply to an alarm beats anybody I've tried.

When I moved I was contacted by someone from ADT. I initially showed lack of interest as I was thinking of going with something with more automation, bells and whistles. As I did some research I decided that I would keep security and home automation seperate.

With that said after a few rejections ADT offered to install all equipment for free. This is windows, doors (i have a lot of them) and a glass break sensor.
There is still the lengthy contract and as I understand they like to raise prices so I still have some negotiating to do ( or try to do). But to DSL_Powers point. It is all negotiable and since ADT has been doing this forever I am not concerned with reliability. I am not sure if there is some other catch or not as I have yet to get back to the sales guy with my mile long list of questions.

Agreed!! Buy your own, with DVR, much better and more reliable than the wireless stuff that most security companies are deploying.
